1 Samuel 30 - David’s conflict with the Amalekites
1- Ziklag was attacked as retaliation against David
2- NOTE- NO ONE WAS KILLED….GOD’S PROTECTION?
6- His LOYAL soldiers now talked about stoning David due to grief. NOT firing him but killing him!
6- DAVID ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD...NOW HE CAN THINK STRAIGHT
7-8- THEN DAVID GETS A WORD FROM GOD…GO AND WIN!
11-16- ANOTHER STEP- getting help from those who have information or counsel
17-20- They get back everything PLUS what the enemy owned…..called David’s spoil
21-25- Everyone got paid in this venture including those keeping watch on the camp. This became a standard in the Hebrew military….everyone’s post is important just like in the body of Christ today.
26-31- These presents were being sent to those cities who supported David and his men while in exile.
1 Samuel 31- The end of Saul and his sons
2- Saul's sons are all killed in the Philistine battle
4- The armor bearers duty was to keep him ALIVE and NOT kill him….confusion. So Saul commits suicide.
5- That fearful spirit will KILL everyone around
7- Once fear has resulted in death...enemy occupation is not far behind.
8-10- Humiliation is the final step of the enemy
11-13- The VALIANT men take care of business….there must not have been many or they would have won the battlefield
David later exumed the bones of Saul and Jonathan and took them to Benjamin their homeland (2 Samuel 21:12-14). Saul was crowned king at 20 and reigned 40 years. He was 60 at this death.
Second Samuel deals with the ascendance of David to the throne of Israel and the forty years of his reign. He is the focal point of the book. The theme of the coming King, the Messiah, is introduced as God establishes an everlasting covenant with David and his kingdom, “Your throne shall be established forever” (7:16) speaks of Jesus Christ of the tribe of Judah.

2 Samuel 1 - Report of Saul’s Death
1-10- An Amalekite brings the story of Sauls death to David. He assumes David want’s to hear of his death...he is wrong. David has honor for a king, this guy has no honor as he lies about killing Saul.
16- What David avoided twice, killing Saul, this guy had no problem doing or at least taking credit for. HIS WORDS WERE CONDEMNING HIM AS FACT. OUR WORDS ALWAYS DO!
18- Song of the Bow was about the bow and arrow being symbols of military might but also the fighting men of Saul’s tribe, Benjamin, who were highly regarded for their military might. The Book of Jasher or “The book of the Upright” was a national songbook of Israel. It is referred to in Joshua 10:12-14 where Joshua’s command, “Sun, stand still over Gibeon” is said to be recorded.
21- Gilboa is the southern border of the Valley of Jezreel or Armageddon.
The fields of offering produced fruit for the firstfruit offerings. The shield was not anointed with oil but still had the blood of battle on it.
2 Samuel 2 - David anointed King of Judah
1- David PRAYS again for direction...do I go and where do I go?
2-7- David seeks UNITY under his new kingship.
8-11- BUT...Abner, commander of Saul’s army (how did this guy survive battle and the king die??) put one of Saul’s son in as king over the northern regions.
8- INTERESTING THAT ISHBOSHETH MEANS MAN OF SHAME...HIS ORIGINAL NAME ESH-BAAL MEANT ‘MAN OF BAAL’...WHY DID SAUL NAME HIM THAT?
10- That son was 40 when he became king...the number for testing and trying. ONLY Judah followed David, the real God appointed king. So things are still way out of order.
13- Joab, David’s general, was also his nephew being son of his sister Zeruiah (1 Chron 2:16)
14- Abner wants to settle the battle with 24 men…
17- but they all die so no one wins….war ensues and David wins
18-33- The story of the battle….Asahel one of David’s mighty men pursues Abner but is killed and there ends the war for now. Remember, this is a CIVIL war with Hebrew against Hebrew. They haven’t even driven out the pagan nations and they are already killing themselves off….MUCH LIKE WE DO.
2 Samuel 3 - War between Saul and David’s house
1- Saul grows weaker while David stronger…..God’s anointing makes the difference
2-5- Sons born to David
6- Abner is gaining strength in the House of Saul
7-8- Concubines were passed from king to king..by sleeping with her Abner was assuming the role as king so Ishbosheth had a point.
9-12- Abner threatens the king with words and scared him to death….because he was NEVER really king. Abner made him so he could break him. WE WANT GOD TO MAKE US!!
13-15- David recalls his first wife Michal...slowly gaining back what was always his. Sadly it broke up an established family….that’s what evil (Saul’s will) will do to people.
16-21- Abner begins to the tribes to concede David as King over all Israel.
22-26- Joab claims to be watching out for David but is probably more concerned with REVENGE…
27- ...for his brother Asahel. In doing this Abner is making David look like a deceptive liar.
NOTE- ABNER FELT SAFE IN HEBRON BECAUSE IT WAS CITY OF REFUGE WHERE NO VENGEANCE COULD BE TAKEN….NOT GOOD
28-30- David’s pronounced curse on Joab was RIGHTEOUS and FULFILLED
31- Joab is to mourn publicly for Abner while Abner is buried with honors- HUMILIATION
35-37- Davids refusal to eat and his mourning for Abner show Israel his innocence in his death….a necessity if he is to gain the trust of the northern tribes at this point
