Joshua 24- Covenant at Shechem
- 1- Located between Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim Shechem provided a large natural amphitheater for large assemblies
- 2- Joshua was prophesying as God spoke through him to the people.
- 3-8- Joshua RESTATES the journey of God proving Himself to His people
- 9-10- BALAAM- A real prophet of God NOT connected to Israel but used by God to VERIFY who Israel was as His people. Balaam is SO significant that he is mentioned 3 TIMES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT…..2 Peter 2:15, Jude 11, Rev 2:14
- 12- Hornet describes fear or panic
- 13- YOU DID NONE OF THE WORK ...IT IS ALL MY FAVOR ...NEVER FORGET
- 14-15- SERVE is used 7 times in two verses ...means exclusive allegiance to God. The choice is between TWO options.
- 16-18- The people respond in the positive toward God.
- 19-20- Joshua, like Moses, knew they would NOT follow through with serving God BUT that God would still get His Son through these people being set aside.
- 21- 25- Joshua makes a legal covenant between the people and God based on their response.
- 26-28- Preservation of the proceedings were put aside in a secret place for unknown reasons
- 32- FULFILLMENT OF A PROMISE- JOSEPH’S BURIAL AT SHECHEM WAS AT HIS REQUEST WHILE IN EGYPT
- 33- We end with the death and burial of Joshua...the warrior and general of Israel who took possession of the promised land. God’s covenant for this saga had been fulfilled.
