Joshua 22- Eastern Tribes return to their Lands
  • 1-9- Troops had left their homes east of the Jordan to fight for the rest of the land of Canaan. Now at least 40,000 were being released to return home after about a decade of fighting. The land was now secured ...it was time to rest. WE MUST HAVE A SEASON OF REST.
  • 10-20- On the way home they stop to build an altar for worship which was DIRECTLY AGAINST THE LAW (DEUT 12-14). To worship anywhere outside God’s prescribed laws was considered paganism. WHAT GOD SAYS GOES. 
  • 12-16- An investigation is launched into what is going on with the worship….some prep for war ...with their own people. GOD’S WORD IS SERIOUS. 
  • 17- 24,000 had died at Peor for false worship ...why are we testing this again is what God is asking!
  • 17-20- The sins of one can bring ugly results into a body of people as OT stories proved out. Sins must be dealt with!
  • 21-29- They explain that the altar was WEST of the Jordan to show the attachment to the western tribes. The river Jordan was at least 100 feet wide with no bridge so it made an effective natural barrier (they had crossed it miraculously). The eastern tribes didn’t want to be forgotten by the other 10. 
  • 30-33- This was acceptable to the leadership and all was good…
  • 34- That altar was named WITNESS ...it would connect the tribes on both sides of the river. When someone on the WEST side of the river saw that altar they remembered there were brothers yet on the EAST side.
